      <image:title>Project Archive - Powersnatch (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Eva Jane Gates If muscles alone have the power to subvert restricting, artificial stereotypes imposed on women in Western societies, then weightlifting with “Girli Concrete” weights exposes the artificiality and inauthenticity of traditional ‘gender’ and sex ideals. By exploring weightlifting through literary, theoretical, material and performative lenses, I aim to dissociate out-dated, negative connotations of women as as objects to possess not to respect. Powersnatch is about women not having to assert themselves in certain space; about women being valued and respected for their endeavours and accomplishments in all spaces. As a weightlifter, I am constantly morphing and shaping, much like my design practice. Although not bound by one material or technique, I gravitate towards film, photography (digital/analogue), woodworking and textiles. I always strive to have a positive, uplifting and progressive impact on any community in question. Without receiving the Tom Fund award, Powersnatch would not exist. The award allowed me to purchase an Olympic Weightlifting set, which then enabled me to extract weightlifting from the gym and explore it through a visual, auditory, theoretical and performative lens. I am so incredibly grateful for the Tom Fund. Thank you! Follow @powersnatchdesign on instagram for more DESIGN x WEIGHTLIFTING updates. evajanegates.co.uk</image:caption>

      <image:title>Project Archive - The Pre-enactors Guild (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Lily McCraith In order to understand politics, we need to embody them. The Pre-enactors Guild is a performative research body, investigating pre-enactments and their role as tools for rehearsing the politics of speculation. Pre-enactment is the rehearsal of something which has not yet happened. The Guild seeks to test new definitions of pre-enactment and allow anybody to pre-enact! The Pre-enactors Guild has been gathering predictions from a famous TV psychic, a stock broker, a local resident and an Engineer to script and rehearse the politics of a contested site. The Guild has also built a Giant and written about pre-enactment in 'The Pre-enactors Almanac'. With the Tom Fund I was able to speak to international television psychic medium, Craig Hamilton Parker. I had a telephone reading with him, which allowed me to have an in depth conversation with him and the predictions he made were used to form part of the script I generated, as well as using the transcription in my research publication. lilymccraith.net</image:caption>

<image:title>Project Archive - Enhancing Experience of Painting (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Debbie Lim ‘Enhancing Experience of Painting’ also known as the EEP Kit, is a painting kit designed to enhance the whole experience of painting by focusing on the process and the act of painting rather than what you are putting onto paper. People have this idea that painting is only for those who do know how to paint, that is creating a beautiful piece. This kit would enable people to break this barrier. Through enhancing the experience, the process becomes the most crucial part rather than the final outcome. Each tool in the kit is designed so as to trigger all sorts of emotions by focusing on the tools and the aspect of using them through the act painting and encouraging people to engage with it. Whilst initially investing the notion of Art Therapy, I could not quite engage within the field, and I wanted to better understand what they do, how they do it, and why they do it. The Tom Fund enabled me to attend two taster sessions; one organised by the MA Department of Art Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths and another one by Art Therapy4all Studio. These opportunities allowed me to get involve in workshops and engage in conversations with professionals and experienced therapists who helped me better understand what they do. These enabled me see how my work and process relates and contrasts with theirs. The fund allowed me to progress through my research and experiments, and for that I’d like to say thank you for generosity and the help you provided for this project!</image:caption>

<image:title>Project Archive - Service with her Smile (Copy)</image:title>
<image:caption>Hayley Bruford and Lilias Adair ‘Service with her Smile’ is an investigation into the emotional labour that is required of those who operate within the service industry. We approached this by deconstructing repeated elements of the performance of labour and redesigning them, using the material cultures within those spaces. We used Taylorism - a model of efficiency that was used in manual labour spaces after WW1 - to look into the efficiency of the service worker script, as a character or persona that becomes saturated over time. One such persona we focussed on was the flight attendant, specifically in terms of their script; the service with a smile, and their physical performance of work. Whilst initially investigating this through representations in popular culture, The Tom Fund enabled us to experience first-hand a short British Airways flight attendant training course. Without this opportunity our understanding of the industry would have been based on assumptions and generic social understanding of the role. The fund supplied an enriched experience of the expected occupational performance in the airline service industry which has been imperative to the project development. The training enabled us to both experience a corporate training system which asks one to edit yourself into a stereotypical character. It’s this self editing and curating, for a job, that our project critiques. Moreover, the experience of having to perform ourselves, whilst attending the course has become an incredibly meaningful and poignant moment in our project research. As serious as it all sounds, it was also just a fascinating experience, learning about different planes, emergency landings, survival skills and of course meeting all the interesting people that were aspiring to become BA flight attendants - it really was brilliant. As you might expect, with the good there comes the bad, and for us there have been some moments of struggle and doubt within the project, however The Tom Fund gave us something incredibly enriching and poignant - not just for our project but also for us as designers, beginning to engage in the world through the material we create and we’re incredibly grateful for it.</image:caption>
